CfP: SEM Student News 19.2 "Ethnomusicology Now" (Deadline: 01.09.2023)

Dear Colleagues,

This is the first call for submissions for the Fall/Winter 2023 issue of SEM Student News. We are calling this new issue, vol. 19, no. 2, "Ethnomusicology Now." We welcome submissions across a range of topics, current student interests, and concerns within ethnomusicology or related academic disciplines.

We are currently accepting submissions for the following categories:

  • Student articles (c. 500–2000 words) related to any topic within ethnomusicology and neighboring disciplines. Authors are encouraged to submit pieces incorporating a variety of media (written with visual, audio, and/or video components). A highly collaborative process, there will be multiple rounds of editing and feedback prior to publication.

  • Student photography, artwork, or creative writing (with attendant permissions and appropriately publishable captions, which must be submitted with the images).

  • Group submissions (c. 500 words per person) around a topic of choice highlighting current student concerns or interests.

  • Professional submissions:
We solicit submissions from scholars and music professionals who work in ethnomusicology and related fields for our “Dear SEM” column (c. 500-750 words). Responses may be related to the issue’s theme and/or respond to any portion of the following prompt:

How has ethnomusicology changed over the time you have been involved in the discipline? Where do you see the greatest potential for growth in ethnomusicology? What are your hopes and desires for the field, and what are your fears? What role do you believe ethnomusicology has for the university and broader society in 2023? What general advice would you offer students pursuing careers in ethnomusicology and related disciplines?

If you would like to submit a piece for this issue, please forward submissions to the editor at semstudentnews[at]gmail[dot]com. We welcome any other ideas, comments, and questions. Submissions must follow Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition (author-date)—attention to our guidelines is crucial for acceptance. Please find our updated submission guidelines at our website and follow them carefully. Files should be submitted in .docx (text), .jpg (photography and images), .mp3 or .flac (audio), and .mp4 (video) formats no later than September 1, 2023. Be sure to include your contact information and university affiliation in your email. Please feel free to share this call widely.
