Conference: Contemporary Urban Music for Inclusion Network

Contemporary Urban Music for Inclusion Network (CUMIN)

Conference (online & offline)

30.06.2023

The conference will take place in London but also with an option to join us online. The event is free of charge with a free lunch for those who attend in person and you can sign up here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cumin-conference-for-in-person-attendance-tickets-600397945417 .
Or, if you prefer to join us online, sign up here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cumin-conference-for-online-attendance-tickets-600411485917 .

The purpose of the network is to encourage discussion, recognition and change in regard to the educational, cultural and social status of contemporary musics such as hip hop, grime, EDM (and house, techno, dubstep, etc. etc.) that tend to get marginalised in many contexts despite actually being some of the most popular musics in the world.

We have guest speakers from exam boards such as AQA, Edexcel and Trinity (who are keen to encourage non-standard forms of music-making such as DJing, rapping, 'making beats' and so forth), national organisations such as Musical Futures, Youth Music and Music Mark (ditto) and numerous practitioners who are using DJing, beatboxing, lyric-writing and so forth in educational and health-related or therapeutic contexts - not to mention some academic presentations including Professor Mark Katz of University of North Carolina (author of Groove Music: The Art and Culture of the Hip Hop DJ, Oxford University Press, 2012, among other relevant texts) who is flying in especially to give a keynote.
