The Department of Music and Sound at Staffordshire University is delighted to announce that, for 2024, our annual NoiseFloor event will take place in conjunction with the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa in the city of Lisbon, Portugal.

  • Notification of acceptance: from Friday 1st March 2024

  • Deadline for registration: Friday 5th April 2024

We are inviting submission of musical and audio-visual works, paper presentations and performances relevant to issues in electronic music and contemporary music. Examples of topics for consideration might include:

  • More than human music and sound art

  • Culture and cross culture

  • Music and wellbeing

  • Improvisation in contemporary music and sound art

  • Interactivity

  • Artificial intelligence in music and sound art

  • Live coding

  • Documentary sound

  • Acoustic ecology

  • Music and visual synergy

  • Affordances of musical instruments

  • Representation in the arts

Please submit your 300-word abstracts and relevant details using the form linked below. There is no submission fee.

Broadly, submissions will be placed into one of the following categories:

  • Paper presentations (including papers with performances or demonstrations, 20 minutes with 10 minutes for questions)

  • Live performance (solo or ensemble, maximum 15 minutes). 

  • Fixed media music (up to 15-channel*, in a dome shaped disposition, maximum 15 minutes).

  • Audio-visual works (video with sound up to 8-channel, maximum 15 minutes)

*Pieces for any multichannel system that would fit ESML’s 15 loudspeakers dome shaped system (one ring of 8 loudspeakers at ear level; a second ring of 6 loudspeakers at 2 meters; one top loudspeaker at 4 meters). Stereo pieces can be real-time diffused.
Please note that we are unable to provide performers or instruments. Contributors will be expected to make their own arrangements.
NoiseFloor 2024 will be held in person in Lisbon on the campus of the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa.
Registration: The fees are £85 for presenters and for attendees, £45 for students. Concessions will be available for special guests, students of Staffordshire University and students of the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. 
Contributors are expected to attend the event.
