The Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Musicology, beginning with the 2024–25 academic year. The Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865, is the nation's oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent liberal arts college. The Division of Musicology offers undergraduate courses from introductory to advanced levels, featuring such musics as Euroamerican concert, jazz, popular, classical, and vernacular practices throughout the world.


The Division seeks to hire a dynamic colleague for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We welcome applicants from all areas and approaches across musicology and ethnomusicology who will be able to complement and expand upon our current programs and courses. We seek a candidate who is committed to excellent teaching, advising and mentoring in a liberal-arts and conservatory setting.

Responsibilities

  • Teach three courses per semester (one may be an ensemble) on topics in the individual's specialty and courses in the Musicology curriculum, drawing, as able, on Oberlin's rich library and archival collections;

  • Maintain a dynamic scholarly research profile, which may also include creative work, public musicology, and/or community engagement;

  • Participate actively in the intellectual, administrative, and creative life of Oberlin College and Conservatory.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should have a PhD in ethnomusicology, musicology, or music history, or equivalent professional experience. ABD candidates will be considered provided they will have completed all requirements for their degree before July 1, 2024;

  • Candidates should demonstrate evidence of ongoing scholarly productivity in the candidate's relevant field of expertise;

  • Candidates should have experience teaching undergraduate students;

  • Candidates should have a commitment to innovative pedagogical, curricular, and scholarly discourses; and

  • Candidates should have a willingness to challenge and change institutional practices that present barriers to different groups.
