Performativity(ies) of Memory(ies) Interdisciplinary Conference
23-24 October 2025
Deadline: 30.4.25
School of Education. Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo Viana do Castelo, Portugal

The Performativity(ies) of Memory(ies) Interdisciplinary Conference is organized by the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo and by the Research Institute for Design Media and Culture (ID+) in cooperation with the Polytechnic University of Cávado and Ave.

In this year's edition we are pleased to have Eleni Ikoniadou (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece), Laura Castro (Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Portugal) and Sarah Bay-Cheng (York University, Canada) as keynote speakers sharing their expertise. In addition to the keynote talks, the conference will feature paper sessions, an exhibition, performances, and panel discussions.

The conceptual openness and diversity of creative processes grant performativity and memory significant potential for exploration, paving the way for new materialities rooted in a “repertoire in intermedial mode” (Bénichou, 2020) and the materiality of ephemerality, made possible through the integration of technological means (Bay-Cheng et al., 2015).

The Performativity(ies) of Memory(ies) Interdisciplinary Conference intends to address the role of memory in contemporary creation by discussing:
i. the process of creation and its relationship to memory work;

ii. memory as a territory under construction (bodies, texts, sounds, images, narratives) through artistic research;

iii. the politics of memory in today's societies and new forms of artistic creation.

The objective of the conference is twofold: firstly, to convene a diverse range of interdisciplinary perspectives; and secondly, to bring together artists whose creative approaches bring their research practice closer to memory.

Contributions address a wide range of topics, such as:

  • Shared memory of experiences and knowledge

  • Participatory research and practice as testimony of (the) memory - Community-generated memory and political identity(ies)

  • (Auto)Biographies, life writings and transtemporality(ies)

  • Processes of re-creation/re-contextualization

  • Identity, narrative(s) and memory sharing

  • Artificial and digital memory

  • From “stock memory” to “flux memory”

  • Memory and the irruption of the Real

The audience includes experts, artists, researchers and academics who work in the areas of heritage studies, artistic studies, cultural studies, film studies, fine arts, visual arts, memory studies, social sciences, literary studies and philosophy, among others.
