Job: Call for Applications - IASPM Journal Editor in Chief and 2x Assistant Editors; Deadline: 01.03.2025

Call for Applications: IASPM Journal Editor in Chief and 2x Assistant Editors

Three positions are now available on the IASPM Journal Editorial team. The duration of the terms will be October 1st 2025 - October 1st 2028. If you are interested, please fill out this questionnaire  by March 1st 2025.

All editorial work is carried out online, via the OJS (Online Journal System), from the preliminary reading of submissions, the peer-review stage and editorial decision-making, to copyediting, layout and final proofreading. We are proposing that the new team are in place by 31/10/25 and that they will be supported through their first issue with the help of the outgoing team.

Over the past three years the volume of papers into the journal has increased and we are keen to maintain this. We want to ensure that the team represent IASPM’s global membership and so are actively seeking expressions of interested from scholars from the Global South.

Expectations of the editor-in-chief

The editor-in-chief oversees the publication of two or more issues per year. They are directly involved in the review process, work with the assistant editors on copy editing and respond to queries about the journal. They work with the Book Reviews editor, who in turn, has their own team of reviewers. This is a great place for ECRs to have a first taste of publishing and we are proud to have implemented this.

The job comes with its challenges. There are two moments of intensity around the publication date and the editor needs to be aware of workflow and have the requisite project management skills to steer the team, the reviewers and the authors through copyediting, proofing and layout stages to publication. We have aimed to ensure transparency throughout the publication process with direct communication with authors and would hope for this to continue.

Expectations of the Assistant Editors (one of which is a paid position, invoiced per issue)

The assistant editors support the life cycle of a publication from initial article acceptance through to publication.  Currently, one assistant editor clears copy for acceptance into the system, assigns reviewers, and assists with copy editing. The paid assistant supports with copyediting and proofing articles that have gone through the peer review system, managing the technical sides of the PKP/OJS system as well as contributing to other aspects of the journal, such as maintaining the reviewer database.

We encourage applications from within the body of IASPM members and ask you to fill in the  questionnaire   if interested. It asks for transparency of experience, we also strive for a balance of training opportunities and expertise amongst the editorial team. We also hope to represent as many of our branches, subject interests, and cultural backgrounds as possible within our appointments.

If you have some questions about the application process, do not hesitate to contact IASPM Journal Editor-in-Chief: Abigail Gardner (agardner[at]glos[dot]ac[dot]uk). General enquiries can also be fielded by assistant editor, Eric Smialek (eric.smialek[at]mail[dot]mcgill[dot]ca).
