Memorial University’s School of Music seeks an innovative and dynamic researcher and teacher in ethnomusicology or a cognate discipline for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting July 1, 2025 (negotiable). Specialization is open; preference will be given to candidates whose research expertise complements those of current faculty.

Duties will include teaching, research and/or creative activity, and service to the university. The successful candidate will supervise M.A. and Ph.D. students in ethnomusicology and teach graduate and undergraduate courses in ethnomusicology and musicology. Additional teaching responsibilities, in keeping with the expertise of the successful candidate, may be required. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a program of scholarly and/or creative activity and to contribute to School of Music committees.

Qualifications include a Ph.D. (completed by start date) in ethnomusicology or a cognate discipline. The successful candidate will have a strong record of both teaching effectiveness and research and/or creative activity.

 Memorial University’s School of Music is Atlantic Canada’s largest and most comprehensive school of music. At the undergraduate level, the School offers Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Joint with Bachelor of Commerce programs with concentrations in performance, musicologies, theory, composition, jazz studies, and music education to 150 students from across Canada and around the world. At the graduate level, the School offers M.Mus. programs (conducting, performance, performance/pedagogy) and M.A./Ph.D. programs in ethnomusicology to more than 50 students from across the globe. Memorial offers nationally distinctive M.A. and Ph.D. programs in ethnomusicology, with unique opportunities for individuals who are interested in researching music as a cultural practice. Our graduate programs are interdisciplinary, with courses offered through both the School of Music and the Department of Folklore. The programs are housed at the Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media and Place (MMaP), which conducts a wide range of research projects on music and culture and hosts a variety of live events, including conferences, performances, a lecture series, and scholarly residency series.
