Conference: Ukraine in Music History: A Reassessment

International conference, University of Vienna

19.05.-21.05.2023

Ukraine is a country rich in musical traditions yet its role in music history has attracted limited attention beyond its borders. The recent Russian invasion and its ideological frame have highlighted the need for a reappraisal of Ukraine’s cultures and a critical approach to its historiography. Our conference seeks to take stock and advance the state of research by examining a wide range of questions central to the study and treatment of Ukraine in music historiography.

The conference will be held in Vienna, with over 30 speakers from different countries, including keynote speakers Liubov Morozova (Ukrainian Institute, Kyiv) and Jann Pasler (Professor of Music, University of California, San Diego). It is still possible to register for the event in Vienna, and for who are interested but unable to attend in person there will be a stream on YouTube. For further information, including the conference programme, and links for registration and the stream, please visit our website: https://ukrainemusichistory.org/.

The conference is co-hosted by the Institute for Musicology and the Institute for East European History of the University of Vienna, and is convened by Leah Batstone (University of Vienna) and Rutger Helmers (University of Amsterdam).
