Job: Post-Doc/Research Fellow in Popular Music Songwriting (Huddersfield; Deadline: 24.01.2023)

Research Fellow in Popular Music Songwriting
University of Huddersfield - School of Arts & Humanities

Deadline: 24.01.2023

More information here.

The successful candidate will join a cross-national research project between the UK and Germany (the German sub-project is led by Michael Ahlers at Leuphana University, Lüneburg). A summary of the project is available on the funder’s website here.

The Music and Music Technology (MMT) subject area at the University of Huddersfield is inviting applications for the role of Research Fellow in Popular Music Songwriting (0.5 FTE, 36 months). This position is part of the bi-national research project “Songwriting Camps in the 21st Century” (SC21), funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the German Research Foundation (DFG).

This project explores how collaborative songwriting takes place in popular music songwriting camps. As the first study to focus on the UK and Germany, it investigates what forms of songwriting camps exist in the 21st century to understand the interests of convenors (publishers, record companies, individuals) and participating professionals. The project examines the collaborative creative processes and interplay of the different skill sets of various roles (topliners, beatmakers, lyricists, producers, performers) and offers insights into the organisation of offline and online camps, legal factors, and the role of songwriting camps within the wider music industries.

The successful applicant will be an expert in popular music and have experience in research and/or practice in any relevant area of the industry, such as songwriting and/or production, music business and industries, or performance. The ideal candidate will be familiar with the commercial popular music industries and be able to participate in songwriting sessions to observe and conduct interviews. In addition, the ideal candidate should have experience with ethnographic methodologies and/or qualitative interview studies.

A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., music, music technology, music business, cultural studies, media studies, sociology) is a prerequisite for admission to the selection procedure.

The university and research team endorse equal opportunities and particularly welcome applications from researchers with diverse backgrounds and skills.

The post holder will join a vibrant research team. They will work with Principal Investigator Dr Jan Herbst (University of Huddersfield) and Co-Investigator Dr Simon Barber (Birmingham City University), as well as with the German team at Leuphana University Lüneburg, consisting of Principal Investigator Prof Michael Ahlers, a Research Fellow and a Research Assistant.

For informal enquiries, please feel free to contact the Principal Investigator, Dr Jan Herbst (Reader in Music Production), by email: j.herbst[at]hud.ac[dot]uk

There may be an opportunity to contribute to the teaching within Music and Music Technology (MMT) as a part-time, hourly paid lecturer if the post holder’s expertise matches the curriculum and teaching needs – subject to individual agreement with the Subject Area Leader.
