Sonic street technologies (SST), such as Jamaican reggae sound systems, originate in marginal urban communities across the Global South, often playing a key role in popular culture. This EU-funded SST project explores the sophisticated practices and techniques used by SST and the social and cultural motivations in their communities of origin. The project will map the "technological diaspora" of SST and use a cultural studies methodology to compare different local SST, study their social and economic conditions and detect possible Jamaican or African influences. The project addresses the relationships between culture and technology, how this generates new knowledge and the extent to which SST low-tech innovations can produce alternatives for individual and community well-being and self-determination.

The Project Manager will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of the management and successful delivery of this ERC funded Consolidator grant and will report to Julian Henriques (PI). The job will include: overseeing the project’s program of work; timelines and events; managing financial resources and reports; and coordinating project publicity and communication including SST online research portal. The candidate will also develop a sound framework for interdisciplinary collaboration, data management/sharing and communications, to ensure the successful delivery of project objectives and outputs. The Project Manager will liaise with project researchers and partners via email, telephone, video link and face-to-face.
