Innovation In Music celebrate their 10 year anniversary in 2023 and are excited to be heading to Edinburgh Napier University for our 10th year conference.
The InMusic23 conference theme is ‘You’re not supposed to do that’ with a focus on misuse and reuse; reimagining and repositioning; hybridisation and recontextualisation; and creating unique pathways and perspectives in music production, performance, technology and business.
Innovation often comes from rebellion, counterculture, thinking outside the box and inventive responses to established ideas. Challenge to existing positions, structures and formats can be the spark of inspiration that leads to meaningful change, advancement, creation or redesign. This can be true of art, technology, society, and culture. Taking the idea of ‘you’re not supposed to do that’ – i.e. alternative uses, perspectives, or approaches – as a starting point, we invite researchers and practitioners to submit proposals that reflect musical and audio innovation, creation, making or design through thinking differently.
This theme is intended purely as inspiration for potential submissions and will represent a major strand of the conference. However, we also welcome submissions that are more broadly related to ‘innovation in music’. All submissions will be considered equally regardless of their topic or focus.
Proposals are also welcome for innovative or interactive performances, workshops and demonstrations appropriate to the conference scope. If you are interested in being involved in any way, please contact us at: info[at]innovationinmusic[dot]uk
A Routledge book of the conference proceedings will be published after the event (subject to contract).
Innovation in Music therefore welcomes academics, creatives, producers, artists, industry professionals, technology developers and equipment manufacturers to come together and submit abstracts for consideration on the conference theme and a wider range of topics including:
Innovative music creation and performance
Music production: past, present and future
Music technology innovation
Innovation in songwriting
Innovation in music business & the music industry
Cross-disciplinary topics around music and innovation
Paper abstracts of 300-500 words will be reviewed for inclusion in the conference programme. After the conference, presenting authors will be expected to submit a full paper for peer review and inclusion in the book of proceedings.
Abstracts should be submitted via the online submission portal by 20 January 2022. Please Note – the InMusic23 submission portal can be accessed via the conference website, from mid-December 2022.
