The School of Music at Georgia State University in Atlanta seeks to hire a tenure-track, Assistant Professor in Music History with specialization in Popular and World Music to begin in the 2023-24 academic year. The successful applicant can expect to teach the equivalence of five three-credit hour courses per academic year focused primarily in the popular and world music topics. Successful candidates will also have a record of publishing scholarly work and will demonstrate a strong trajectory toward a national reputation as a teacher-scholar in musicology. We are especially interested in applicants who can connect their teaching with the diverse population of the student body at Georgia State University. This position is a full-time, continuing appointment subject to a third-year review in accordance with promotion and tenure policies and eligible for full health and retirement benefits (see https://hr.gsu.edu/service-centers/benefits/new-hire-benefits/ ).
SALARY RANGE: $60,000 – $67,000
RESPONSIBILITIES: The selected candidate can anticipate teaching a mixture of courses for undergraduate and graduate students to include general education courses and courses for students in our music industry programs (History of R&B, Rock, and Rap; World Music; etc.); courses in the music history and literature sequence for music majors (e.g., World music and Western Music History 2), and topical research-based seminars for graduate students in the M.M. and M.M.Ed. programs.
Essential Qualifications
ABD in Music History or Musicology
Specialization in Popular Music and World Music Courses
Demonstrable success teaching collegiate music history courses
Demonstrable commitment to inclusivity in music instruction (diversity, equity, and accessibility in pedagogy and course design, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
Completed Ph.D. in Musicology or Ethnomusicology
Demonstrable success teaching online, large-enrollment courses
