“Slow Train Coming? Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in UK Music Higher Education”
In late 2019, the Equality and Diversity in Music Studies network, made up of higher education music staff and students, set up a working group to produce a report on EDI across the music HE sector. Ahead of the publication of the final report, this talk will report on the findings from the report, first outlining analysis of national data on staff and students in music higher education from 2016-20, exploring inequalities across the ‘pipeline’ from undergraduate to postgraduate to staff member across gender, class, race, and disability. Second, it describes findings from the survey we carried out with 32 music departments or institutions which explored what actions they were taking, and challenges they were facing, in addressing issues of EDI in music higher education. Finally, some of the recommendations for next steps are discussed, together with the challenges we faced in attempting to devise appropriate recommendations.
The presentation is hosted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and will be moderated by Dr Thomas R. Hilder.
