Webinar: Cantopop in/and the changing society of Hong Kong, 20.10.2022, Online

20 Oct 2022 (Thu), AEDT 4pm/HKT 1pm,

Speaker: Stephen Yiu Wai Chu (Programme Director, Hong Kong Studies, University of Hong Kong)
Host: Ester Leung (Coordinator, Translation Studies, University of Melbourne)

Hong Kong Cantopop (Cantonese popular songs), once the leader in Chinese popular music, was generally considered to be in decline in the new millennium. Not unsurprisingly, in a city deeply impacted by the 2019 social unrest and the subsequent pandemic, its comeback has been widely reported in the 2020s. This talk will explore how the possibilities of Cantopop, which rose to new heights in the 1980s because of its increased hybridities, would be hopelessly limited in a polarised society like Hong Kong. The discussion will also shed light on the importance of plurality in "Hong Kong (Pop Cultures) as Methods".
