Somaesthetics and Sound

The intertwining of sound and the body is fascinating and multifarious. Until fairly recently, sound has mainly been studied as an acoustic or auditive phenomenon. In turn, the body has been commonly approached as a physiological entity. Lately, however, the embodied and experiential aspect of sound has increasingly gained ground in research and pedagogies as well as in the arts.

In this issue of the Journal of Somaesthetics, we invite contributions from various fields exploring sound as manifesting itself in the body, as originating from the body, or as a meaningful, embodied experience. The focus is on the body-aesthetic, or somaesthetic dimensions of sound. Aesthetic experience here is not limited to the arts alone.

The articles may deal with the human voice, instrumental sound, sound produced by other means, the musical or non-musical sound, noise, silence, sounds of nature and animals, soundscapes etc. Sound can be explored through various senses, for example, as heard, as seen, as being touched by, or as an interoceptive, proprioceptive, kinaesthetic, or even synaesthetic experience. It can be examined from diverse positions, such as listener, producer, outsider, victim, skilled or unskilled body, etc.

We encourage authors to propose new, creative ideas and viewpoints that challenge our habitual modes of thinking about the relationship between sound, aesthetic experience, and the body. Concrete examples or case studies, as well as empirical material revealing the embodied potential of sound and of the sounding potential of the body, are particularly welcome. In addition to research contributions, we welcome artistic-research and artistic and pedagogical approaches.

The Journal of Somaesthetics is a peer-reviewed, online, academic journal devoted to research that advances the interdisciplinary field of somaesthetics, understood as the critical study and meliorative cultivation of the experience and performance of the living body (or soma) as a site of sensory appreciation (aesthesis), practice and realization.
