Discipl(in)es of Transgression? Transdisciplinarity and the Study of Popular Culture University of Salzburg (Austria)
02-04 October 2019

Deadline: 03.06.2019

The study of Rock and Metal music has increasingly established its position in recent years. This can easily be concluded from the number of annual conferences and publications every year. Especially at conferences the involvement of musicians has been emphasized regularly. The close connection between (transdisciplinary) research and musical practice has become a special feature of many formats. While exploring the possibilities of research new issues have to be tackled. How to work with the personal involvement of researchers in musical practice? - A question that could equally be transferred to other areas of research. But at the same time, how can one use the potentials of the different perspectives and bring them together methodologically? It The HardWired VII. Heavy Metal Research Conference VII emphasizes the diversity of approaches in the field of Rock and Metal research, which is why the Hardwired VII conference seeks to provide the framework for different scientific positions on ‘Popular Culture’. This may include contributions shifting the focus beyond metal music in order to rethink established theoretical concepts (such as the concept of transgression given in the title, for instance). Lecture proposals (also for workshops or other formats) will be accepted until 03 June 2019. Further information given in the CfP.

Keynotes confirmed: Rosemary Hill, Keith Kahn-Harris
