Job: Postdoc in International Humanities - Music, Brown University

Brown University invites applications for a 2-year International Postdoctoral Fellowship in Music with specializations in studio production and/or electronic media, focused on the aesthetics and techniques of music of the African diaspora.

This position is to be held jointly at the Cogut Institute for the Humanities and the Department of Music, effective July 1, 2019. Our goal is to appoint an exceptional music producer, composer, sound artist or electronic musician with transnational interests and evidence of exceptional artistic and scholarly promise. The ideal candidate’s work would demonstrate how diverse modes of creative practice and scholarly research may be closely entwined. Applicants from Historically Underrepresented Groups and those outside of North America are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will teach two courses per year in the Department of Music cross-listed in the Cogut Institute’s Humanities course offerings. The successful candidate will help fulfill the Cogut Institute’s mission to encourage interdisciplinary work, interrogate the impact of digital media, explore issues of aesthetics and identity, and nurture relations between the humanities and the studio and performing arts.

The Music Department offers two Ph.D. programs: one in Music and Multimedia Composition, and the other in Musicology and Ethnomusicology. The department’s research facility, the MEME studio, actively promotes production, publications, and technology exploring new art forms that combine digital music and sound with performance, installation, human-computer interaction, video processing, text, and/or images. The Cogut Institute for the Humanities supports collaborative research among scholars in the humanities, focusing on interdisciplinary and comparative work across cultural and linguistic boundaries. A commitment to diversity and intellectual freedom has remained a hallmark of Brown University since its establishment. The Department of Music--with 14 full-time faculty, 30 teaching associates, a music library, and state-of-the-art music and multimedia production facilities--supports undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of musicology, theory, ethnomusicology, composition, performance, electronic music and multimedia.

The fellow will also be affiliated with the Cogut Institute and is expected to participate in the weekly Tuesday seminars as well as other activities of the Institute.

Salary of $61,500 with an increase to $63,907 the second year plus benefits and a reimbursable research budget of $2,000 per year.

A doctoral degree must be in hand by July 1, 2019 and must have been awarded in the last five years.
