Call for Contributions: "Heretical Sound Synthesis" mini-symposium Helsinki
Call for Papers and Contributions: Heretical Sound Synthesis mini-symposium
Deadline: 01.02.2019
To be held at the University of the Arts Helsinki, SIbelius Academy, Centre for Music & Technology, May 16th to 17th, 2019
The HSS mini-symposium invites abstracts and proposals for papers and contributions, including accounts of artistic projects, on or around the subject of heretical sound synthesis. Ideally, proposals will include a demonstration component, which can be live or recorded. Live demonstrations must be safe.
To appreciate the breadth of the area covered by the symposium, contributors are asked to consider the following non-exhaustive list of key words: computational, algorithmic, digital, analogue, electrical, mechanical, other, hardware, software, SuperCollider, Max, Axoloti, microcontrollers, warps, kludges, DIY, hacks, source errors, maker culture, databending, failure, anti-science, alchemy, unorthodoxy, cavorting, wizardry. Methods may be based on new or existing technologies.
The call is open to designers, developers and practitioners of all genres and orientations of music and sound art. If a definition of heretical sound synthesis is needed (and maybe it isn’t) it can be approached via negation: in the pursuit of new sound possibilities, additive, subtractive, FM, granular and other orthodoxies of sound synthesis are not encouraged.
if you would like to present a 20 minute session, please send a title and abstract of 200 words, along with a biography of 50 words, to andrew.bentley (at) uniarts.fi by latest Friday February 1, 2019. Proposals will be evaluated by a review committee of academics and experts. In your submission, please Include links to any video or audio material that will help the committee evaluate the synthesis methods and their practical or artistic applications. Successful presenters will be informed by Friday March 1, 2019.
The HSS mini-symposium is eager to encourage the participation of companies producing hardware and software for sound synthesis, especially if they have a current or future interest in HSS techniques. Companies interested in this possibility should contact the organizers for details.
The HSS mini-symposium has been timed to happen in the days leading up to the Kontula Electronic festival, 17-18 May 2019, in order to make it possible for attendees to combine their conference visit with the festival’s varied cultural programme. Any inquiries about Kontula Electronic should be addressed to the producers of the festival via email, FB or their webpage:
