CfP: (Re-)Covering Musics (Carleton University)

Carleton University:
“(Re-)Covering Musics”
21 March 2015 – Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Deadline: 25 Feb 2015

Carleton University’s Music and Culture Graduate Student Society invites proposals for its fifth annual conference, (Re-)Covering Musics. We are pleased to announce that this years keynote speaker is Kip Pegley from Queens University. Dr. Pegleys current research explores the use of music in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder for veterans. Her paper is titled Music, Canadian Soldiers, Traumatized Lives.

This colloquium focuses on exploring the relationship between music and recovery. Music has been associated with providing a sense of community and serving as a comforting outlet for listeners. Many cultural groups perform music in traditional healing practices, while others use music as an alternative to mainstream treatments or for self-healing. In addition, music can be reinterpreted and altered in production and performance. Paper topics may query: how and why is music used in the process of recovering? What is the purpose and appeal of musical reinterpretations or cover versions to musicians and listeners?

In addition to papers related to the conference theme, we welcome and strongly encourage interdisciplinary papers on, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Music technologies
  • Hip hop and rock music studies
  • Sound studies
  • Political ecology and music
  • Music and place
  • Globalization, transnationalism, and diaspora
  • Music and identity, including fandom and religion
  • The sociology of music
  • Music and labour
  • Music industries
  • Music and other forms of media

Paper presentations are 20 minutes followed by a 10-minute discussion period. Those interested should submit a title and 250 word abstract by 16 February 2015. Please include the following in the body of the email: your name, institution, technical requirements, and contact information. Proposals will be reviewed anonymously and results will be announced no later than 25 February 2015. Please send submissions or questions to: mcgss.carleton -at- gmail.com.
