Alpen-Adria-Universität & Kärntner Landeskonservatorium:
„Voices of identities – Vocal music and the de/con/struction of communities in the former Habsburgian areas 1914-2014“
16-19 October 2014 – Klagenfurt (Austria)
Deadline: 15 March 2014
European history has rarely met changes as fast, dense and radical as those that have taken place in the regions of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire over the past hundred years. This cultural area has experienced political conflicts, the setting and dissolution of borders, the construction of similarities, of differences, and of ever new identities.
Being tied to text, vocal music genres reflect such changes especially strongly. Operas and operettas, oratorios and cantatas, choir music for amateurs and professionals, folksongs, schlager, pop and rock hits: they all have helped and still do help to establish identities in many ways, connecting people on national, ethnical, local or social levels.
This interdisciplinary conference aims to open multiple perspectives on the identity-relevant implications of every kind of vocal music from the last days of the Habsburg Empire to the present day. The conference organisers encourage papers from scholars working in all connected fields of research, such as musicology, sociology, history, literary studies, media and communication studies, philosophy and aesthetics, as well as Slavonic, Romance and German studies. Papers dealing with more than one region as well as with more than one methodical approach are especially welcome, for example on one of the following topics:
- Post-Habsburgian identities between internationalism, nationalism, and regionalism
- Middle vs. East European identities in music
- Music reflecting civil and cultural conflicts
- State operas and festive cantatas
- Generating identities: top-down or vice versa?
- Ethnic texts and subtexts in popular music (schlager, pop music)
- “Volksmusik” and folk music traditions
- Underground music in Socialist times
This conference forms at the same the annual convention of the Österreichische Gesellschaft für Musikwissenschaft (Austrian Society for Musicology). Proposals for individual papers (300 words) including a short CV should be sent to christoph.flamm at aau.at or daniel.ender at aau.at by 15 March 2014.
