Assistant Professor in Popular Music and Cultural Studies in the School of Humanities

Applications are invited for a joint appointment in the departments of Comparative Literature and Music in the School of Humanities for an Assistant Professorship in Popular Music and Cultural Studies, from September 1, 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal. Appointees with demonstrated performance will be considered for tenure towards the end of the second three-year contract.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree by the date of appointment. Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment and innovative approach to both teaching and research. The ideal candidate should embrace contemporary musical practices across the full spectrum of popular music, integrate modes of historical and ethnographic inquiry, and be committed to interdisciplinary work across music and cultural studies. Expertise in areas such as technology and the new media, the culture industry, and performance studies is desirable. Knowledge of popular musical studies in an Asian cultural context will be an advantage. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to a range of cultural studies courses on popular music presented in theoretical, postcolonial, global, and comparative frames. A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with the appointee’s qualifications and experience will be offered, as well as leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. Appointments will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
