The Department of Contemporary Arts at Manchester Metropolitan University (Cheshire Campus) invites applications for a senior lecturing position in the area of Popular Music.
The Department of Contemporary Arts has for more than three decades held a significant reputation in Europe as a vibrant and active community of practitioners and theorists working together with a commitment to Practice-as-Research in both subject specialisms and inter-disciplinarity. The Department has a diverse portfolio of provision in Music, Creative Music Production, Popular Music, Drama, Contemporary Theatre, Dance, Creative Writing and Community Arts. The department plans for a future growth of international, postgraduate and part-time provision in its recruitment and is directly responsible for postgraduate research in a range of contemporary arts subjects along with one taught postgraduate programme.
The new, purpose-built facility for Contemporary Arts at Crewe provides dedicated studios for music and performance including three recording studios with a complex of music spaces, a small concert hall, four theatre spaces, and two dance spaces. There are also two specialist digital facilities with 25 Apple Macs each, one dedicated to digital music. The well-known Alsager Arts Centre moved to Crewe in the Summer of 2009 and became the Axis Arts Centre, housed within the Department. The Centre has a reputation for its work with acclaimed companies and practitioners in Music, Contemporary Drama, Theatre, Dance, Writing and other innovative arts practices. The department has 25 members of staff and is supported by more than 25 associate lecturers, 10 instrumental tutors, 7 performance technicians, a programme team, and a student life office.
The Faculty in Cheshire is one of 8 faculties of Manchester Metropolitan University, which is one of the UK’s largest and most popular Universities.
We are now seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to join the music team. You will need to have excellent subject knowledge in popular music, including songwriting, performance practice, critical and analytical discourses in popular music studies.
You will have demonstrable experience in designing, delivering and evaluating relevant educational provision, as well as leading and coordinating teams in educational contexts.
Experience in supervising to PhD level and/or a record of external income and research activities would be of advantage, as would be substantial industry experience.
